Tommi Immaisi (B. Sc. Business Administration, International Business) is a purchasing specialist with nearly two decade’s experience from a variety of shipbuilding projects. Tommi has been working for NIT since 2014, starting as a Purchaser and nowadays in the role of Procurement Director and a member of the NIT management team.
Tommi’s background is strongly in shipbuilding, having worked with project management and procurement in various projects since 2007. Earlier collaboration with NIT and a good reputation of the company encouraged him to join the purchasing team in 2014.
Tommi says that working in shipbuilding procurement requires comprehensive knowledge of the whole industry. “Procurement’s scope of tasks in shipbuilding is wide. You need to be familiar with different types of materials and subcontractors, as well as works from backgrounds to interior installations.” Knowledge of industry specific regulations and a wide network are highly valuable. He mentions that in project work you also need to be able to adapt to rapid changes and pressure. “Humour plays a vital role in this fast-paced project world.”
As Procurement Director, Tommi is responsible for the procurement operations of the NIT group. This means overseeing purchasing operations, developing the processes and proper resourcing. He is motivated by the challenges and versatility of the job. “Each project is different and every time you learn something new.”
Leading people is an essential part of the job, and Tommi highlights his motivated and skilled team as well as good atmosphere. “As a team leader, I strive for a laid-back and open atmosphere where everyone dares to express their opinions and suggest improvements.” He says leading people is about listening and understanding each person. “We need to take good care of our personnel and their well-being as they are our biggest asset.”
