Tony Ääritalo (B. Sc. Mechanical Engineering) started in NIT design team in 2021. Tony executed his thesis for NIT in 3D design and is a great example of the career path into NIT through education. Since then, Tony worked as a Designer and lately got excited about more action at our site and now works as Foreman with our project at Turku Shipyard.
During his studies, Tony got an opportunity to make a thesis work for NIT. Thesis focused on 3D design, and his research provided useful findings about design programs, and were later developed further in NIT. Having already worked on design tasks while completing his thesis, staying in NIT felt like a natural progression.
Tony joined NIT as a Designer and has been involved in several projects, including Icon and Star of the Seas, Spirit of Tasmania, and Asuka III. His primary focus was on interior and prefabrication design work. When an urgent need on the site arose for a Designer, Tony joined the project team there. This chance introduced him to more direct collaboration with customers, site teams, and purchasers, offering him a new perspective on project execution.
Working closely with the site team gave the spark for Tony to work on the site where the project is. NIT actively supports career growth, and when Tony expressed interest in working on site, the company encouraged his transition. An opportunity for a role of Foreman was presented and Tony made the move to the Turku site.
As a Foreman, Tony highlights the fast and action-packed work environment. Collaborating closely with customer, owner, and subcontractors, and the team work on site keeps him engaged and motivated. The speed of the project is what Tony finds exciting – everything happens on the place at the very moment.
Despite transitioning to Foreman on site, design works have not been forgotten. On the contrary – Tony finds it as an advantage to have a deeper understanding in both departments. He still utilizes his skills in design, being able to create design material with a perspective of the installation process as well.
