Design & Engineering
Engineering Expertise
NIT expertise covers steel to steel design and engineering, from steel construction and technical features to the finest interior details. With wide knowledge of materials and building methods, even complex designs and solutions can be done without compromising architectural requirements or quality.
Our in-house designers create cost-efficient, feasible and optimized solutions with various design tools: AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, SolidWorks, Cadmatic and Aveva.
Our designers are up to the latest rules and regulations, industry specific certifications, and also providing fire load and weight calculations.
We provide the most innovative solutions, committed to continuous development. Training programs, regular updating of the knowledge as well as development and research projects are parts of taking the innovation forward.
Interior Design
NIT designers execute detail design for interior areas. The building method and installation are always considered, choosing prefabricates and modularized solutions to minimize installation time and work on board. Modularization is supported by our own metal workshop Leo Steel, that has own designers specialized in prefabricated parts.
Modern design technologies are utilized for smooth work and the best results. Most of the design work is done with 3D models that can be transferred into VR models. This eases the implementation of architectural plans, approval process and brings alive the building method and visual outcome. VR models also reduce the need for physical mock-up models and lowers the environmental impact.
Seamless collaboration
NIT’s design and engineering team ensures the communication flow and flexible collaboration with the customer. We are in active cooperation with the basic design department of the shipyard as well as architects.
In-house design department works tightly together with procurement and other teams. This is how we secure for example accurate material lists with specifications, and fire load and weight calculations according to the needs of procurement and the customer.

Background Design
Design for backgrounds covers everything behind the visual interiors, meaning technical features such as pipes, insulations and HVAC systems. Background design is made by NIT professionals, and also with the support of our great network of design partners. For background design NIT teams work with 3D models in Cadmatic and Aveva.
Prefabrication is the key part of background design and materials are produced outside the site in external workshops. Cooperation with our site, installation and interior design teams is extremely important for avoiding collisions with system design and interior design. NIT’s design coordinators operate on site at these interfaces of teams.

Carbon Footprint Calculation
Talking about innovations, Carbon Footprint Calculation is one of them. It is the first of its kind service to provide customers data of the environmental impact of different types of ship interiors, as well as help them reduce carbon footprint by researching and recommending better, more sustainable and ecological solutions.
Alternative materials and solutions often impact the design and installation, hence carbon footprint is to be considered already in the design phase of the vessel. NIT can integrate calculated CO2e values of materials in the design parameters of 3D models for efficient design and making impacts visible.
