Shipbuilding solutions with Carbon Footprint Calculation

NIT is promoting environmental practices and offers the possibility to achieve environmentally friendly shipbuilding solutions with Carbon Footprint Calculation.

Carbon Footprint Calculation is a first of its kind service developed by NIT for measuring the environmental impact of ship interiors and products. With the calculation, emission factors can be identified and alternative materials can be selected. NIT offers consultation for balancing design, material choices and installation for more ecological solutions.

Carbon Footprint Calculation states the environmental impact of the chosen ship interior area, product by product.

Calculation also includes the carbon handprint, indicating the reduction potential through reuse and recycling, and the installation phase carbon footprint. Results state the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of calculated products in kg CO2e. Developed together with VTT (Technical Research Center of Finland) calculation tool is based on EN 15804 standard that considers different stages of the product life cycle.

Case example

Carbon footprint was executed for a public restaurant area in a cruise ship.

Interior area was divided into main material groups and to smaller areas based on their functionality. This created baseline information of lining, floor, ceiling, furniture and steel outfitting materials in different types of ship areas. Calculation was carried out with existing materials and part lists of the area as well as pre-fabrication and interior drawings.

Main factors for carbon footprint were identified along the emission reduction potential by carbon handprint. This enabled to research alternative materials with less carbon handprint and compare the material choices.
